Sewing a Decorative Button Placket onto Children's Trousers – Easy Guide for Beginners

You can easily embellish simple children's trousers with a decorative button placket. In this step-by-step guide, you'll learn how to neatly sew on a decorative button placket – quickly, easily, and perfect for beginners. The button placket is purely for decoration and does not require buttonholes.

Instructions: Sewing on a Decorative Button Placket for Children's Trousers

  1. Mark the front center of the children's trousers
Lay the children's trousers flat in front of you and mark the front center with tailor's chalk or a fabric marker. This marking will help you position the decorative button placket straight and neatly later.

  2. Cut the fabric strip
Now cut a fabric strip. This should be about 4 to 5 cm wide and approximately 12 to 15 cm long – depending on the size of the children's trousers. It's better to cut the fabric a little longer so you can adjust it later.

  3. Fold and iron the fabric strip
Place the fabric strip wrong sides together, so the right side of the fabric is facing outwards. Fold it lengthwise to the center and carefully iron the edge so it becomes nice and flat and precise.

  4. Prepare the decorative placket
Then fold both long outer edges to the center again and iron over them. This creates a neat and stable decorative placket with folded edges.

  5. Position the button placket
Place the finished placket centered on the front of the trousers along your marking. The folded closed edge points downwards, while the top edge is flush with the waistband. Secure everything with pins or clips.

  6. Sew on the decorative button placket
Now sew the button placket closely along both long sides. Make sure to sew as straight as possible, and secure the seam well at the beginning and end. Optionally, you can also sew the bottom short edge.

  7. Check the fit of the placket
Then check the fit of the decorative placket. It should lie flat and not warp. If necessary, iron the button placket carefully again.

  8. Mark button positions
Now mark the positions for the buttons. Place the markings at even intervals of about 2 to 3 cm in the center of the placket.

  9. Sew on the buttons
Sew the buttons by hand or with a sewing machine at the marked spots. Since this is a purely decorative button placket, no buttonholes are required.

  10. Finished decorative button placket
Your simple button placket is now finished and adds a lovely decorative accent to the children's trousers. This small detail makes children's clothing particularly individual and lovingly designed.
